Bargains!

When I go to Sainsbury's for my big shopping trip of the week (yesterday), I tend to be given several vouchers with my lengthy printed receipt.

Recently I've been having £10.50 off any bill above £70.

I've also had 245 Nectar points with a litre of Olive oil.

70 Nectar points with a pack of Tenderstem Broccoli spears.

and 100 Nectar points with a pack of Chorizo cooking Sausages; to name just a few.

I noticed yesterday that I saved over £22 on my shopping bill, and I already have over £24 on my Nectar card, which I shall keep to buy the December Turkey.

I do know that I'm being 'tempted' by all these special offers, but I would never buy anything I didn't want. I do have plenty of Olive oil in the house, but the bottle I bought yesterday will simply go into the cupboard until required.

Yesterday I spent nearly £100 on my big shopping trip, and to get £22 off is extremely welcome. I bought a lot of wine, a leg of lamb, and some salmon for the freezer, amongst other things.

My equivalent shopping in France at Leclerc, gives me almost nothing on my loyalty card; just a few miserable Euros after a whole year.

  1. Saturday is the busiest supermarket shopping day so I am a little surprised that that is your chosen day. Wouldn't it be quieter mid-week?

    1. It's completely the opposite here. The roads are extremely quiet on Saturdays, and as I arrive at Sainsbury's at about 7.30 am, it is reasonably quite there too. I sometimes go on Tuesday mornings and it's a nightmare on the roads.

    2. Oh, I didn't realise that you go shopping so early but now it makes sense.

    3. For quite, read 'quiet'. Saturday mornings here are a real pleasure, I suppose most folk are still nursing their hangovers.

  2. I'm surprised we don't have similar schemes such as the one you enjoy with Sanisbury's. It's the same here that you experience in France. Compared to the UK our food is expensive - lamb especially is astronomical - but we have no incentives at all, yet I have five supermarkets (Lidl, Aldi, and three major Spanish chains) less than a ten minute drive from home. You would think that they would offer incentives to shop with them, but no, they are all more or less the same price and quality,
and they all open at 9 a.m. and close around 9 p.m.Traffic and parking are rarely a problem now the holiday season has more or less finished.

    1. Sainsbury's opens at 7 am, Leclerc opens at 9 am. I don't think there's a huge difference between here and France; except for the price of wine. In many ways both supermarkets are quite similar.

    1. I really enjoy my Saturday trips to Sainsbury's. I like driving, and I love buying good things to eat. It's a shame there's only one Saturday each week.

  4. Those are great bargains. It's worth shopping at Sainsburys. We get points when we shop at the supermarket but it takes a couple of months even to get 5 euros worth

    1. At Leclerc last this summer, over three months I earned about 1 Euro. It was ridiculous.

  5. There are no such discount vouchers in Massachusetts grocery stores. Like you, I spend $60-100 every time I step inside a grocery store. Kansas City Steak offered $30 off my next purchase so I ordered a prime rib roast. Even with the discount it was still $100+.

    1. I was once briefly staying in Miami airport, in transit for Cayman. I went to a small restaurant, and ordered a STEAK SANDWICH. It was two pieces of bread with a huge steak in the middle; and cost ONE DOLLAR. That was in 1980-ish. I was astounded; it was superb.

  6. All of these coupons, bits of paper and club cards etc play into the supermarkets hands . The money they would save if they stopped all of that and just lowered the prices. XXXX

    1. Yes, I'm sure it's all a ploy. But anyone who gives me twenty quid towards shopping that I would have done anyway, gets my support.

  7. We get 'coupons' (vouchers?) at our grocery stores (usually $10 off if you spend $50 or buy one and get the 2nd free). It's not great, but every bit helps. We still spend way over $100 every week...

    1. $10 off $50 sounds even more generous. I would be there every week. I always forget something on Saturdays, so there's usually another trip somewhere. I don't think I would ever spend much more than £130 a week.
