I see him as a stream of consciousness painter. He starts somewhere, then doesn't stop until it's all filled in. Of course the interesting bit is seeing the end product.
Cro I have a few painting about the place that people 'don't understand'. I don;t think that matters in the least - what matters is that I like them, I admire the workmanship and I wish oh how I wish that I could have done them.
It's always difficult to analyse what one likes about a painting. I, too, have lots of paintings that I would find difficult to appreciate in words. You just like them, or you don't.
I agree with you absolutely, Weaver. I have a lot of paintings on my walls. I think that I 'understand' them as well as enjoy them. But perhaps I don't because, in most cases, I have absolutely no idea what the artist had in his mind when they were painted. I suspect Cro would not give a single one houseroom. Perhaps you wouldn't either. I should really have said what I felt when I commented. I really don't like any of the Alan Davie paintings that I have seen.
Luxuriant head of hair and beard!
ReplyDeleteGood painter too.
DeleteI just couldn't (and still can't) understand his works.

DeleteIt is not a painting that I particular like, but we all have different tastes. His beard, though, is impressive.
ReplyDeleteHe seems to have kept that same beard all his life.
