I had a 'Big Birthday' last summer, and this (below) was one of my prezzies.
My good friend S gave me this totally charming Egg Cup and cover. She knows how much I love such things, and she managed to find this perfect gift for me.
It is basically a silver egg cup with a glass domed cover. It looks as if it ought to be antique, but apparently it isn't. It is an extravagant piece of breakfast kit, of a type that one might expect to find at Boodles or The Savoy. The cover is designed to keep one's boiled egg warm whilst Geeves irons your shirt.
Such objects make the simplest of gastronomic activities, such as eating a boiled egg, into an even greater pleasure.
A few years ago S and I were mooching around a Boot Sale in some French village together, when I picked-up this Egg Cup (below) and admired it.
On returning home she presented it to me. She had bought it behind my back as a surprise.
It is a really charming little Egg Cup, and is the one I always use in France.
Unfortunately I now longer scour the Boot Sales of either England or France, but in the days when I did, beautiful old Egg Cups were always in mind; as were antique glass Eye-Wash Cups (but that's for another day).

Both eggcups are very nice.
ReplyDeleteDo you remember the eggcups we had as children? They also had chickens on them, but they weren't as nice as mine!
DeleteWell...I thought I'd seen everything, just goes to show that one is never too old to see something new or in this case old
ReplyDeleteNice isn't it. A different level of breakfast Boiled Egg eating. Tres chic!
DeleteA boiled egg definitely deserves a beautiful egg cup.
ReplyDeleteI believe so too. It makes something so simple into a pleasure.
DeleteLike being hugged by your friend every time you use it.
ReplyDeleteIt is. Of course I always remember who gave them both to me every time I use them.
DeleteVos coquetiers sont charmants. Enfant j'avais un coquetier en porcelaine, c'était une poule avec son poussin et le poussin avait un coquelicot dans son bec. Quand j'étais adulte je l'ai offert à la petite fille d'un ami. .

That sounds lovely; just the sort of thing I tried to find for my collection. They are becoming quite rare.
DeleteIt's lovely Cro, very posh, a bit of luxury at breakfast time. I also like your other egg cup, very sweet. I like all those sorts of things, farmyardy types of salt and pepper shakers, teapots like cottages and all of that....not that I have any myself, I just like them!
ReplyDeleteIt's all a bit kitsch, but in a very nice way. For me it's also a part of my childhood too, so very nostalgic.
DeleteI have a collection of egg cups though I rarely use them.. I prefer them scrambled. I do love the different shapes and designs.
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time I knitted egg covers to keep them warm. A waste of time. No one used them. I like your cover though. Far more practical and easy to use
I don't know why, but I cannot eat scrambled eggs. I love them in ALL OTHER ways, but not scrambled. I still have an 'egg cosy' that was made at junior school by my youngest son. I use it often, it's in France.
DeleteI had that egg cup and dome for a birthday too years ago. I kept it in a display cabinet in the kitchen but one day I got it out and realised the glass dome was chipped. Sadly the dome went in the bin without ever being used. It must have always been chipped but I hadn't noticed.
ReplyDeleteI've never seen one before, so it's good to know that others are (were) out there.
DeleteI think it is important to have a glass cover for one's egg cup in case a small bird gets in the house and plops while in flight. Mind you one can always ask Jeeves (with a J!) to clear up the mess.
ReplyDeleteIn this house, Geeves (with a G) would already have shot the bird.
DeleteI have never mastered eating an egg out of the shell like that.
ReplyDeleteYou need lessons. I do give lessons myself at £25 per hour!
DeleteIt’s the little things like this that make life so much more enjoyable. One could use a plastic egg cup but it wouldn’t be the same. I like your salt and pepper holder very much.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. Everything we use should be carefully selected, not for price, but for the pleasure of usage. It's amazing what one can buy at boot sales, etc. The S & P holder is French.
DeleteBoot sales, charity shops etc. One of my best buys was an unworn Burberry trench for C$15.
DeleteYou never know what you'll find. Your coat sounds like a BARGAIN!
DeleteI haven't had boiled eggs for ages, I do still have some egg cups somewhere, but nothing fancy.
ReplyDeleteI have quite a selection of egg cups, but I only ever use TWO.
DeleteHusband has one that is a guardsman (bought in Harrods at Heathrow) The Busby holds the egg.
ReplyDeleteI have a few animal ones from when our children were young.
Now, I can no longer eat eggs, developed an allergy to the proteins in the whites (got an epi pen, it's that bad) But those little cups hold happy memories.
What a very annoying allergy. Eggs are in so many things, I can hardly imagine not being able to eat them.
DeleteHow lovely
ReplyDeleteJohn, knowing you, I quite expect that you have one equally personal.
