Rap 'music'

As news comes of yet another 'Rap Singer' (named Offset?) being shot, in a US casino, one has to wonder why these people are so aggressive towards one another. One has to presume that such aggression is all part of their identity and raison d'etre.

You don't hear of people like Cliff Richard shooting at Elton John, or Vera Lynn shooting at Doris Day, so why do these people, usually with very silly names, all seem to hate each other? Maybe it's to do with alternative 'business matters', rather than the 'music'.

If (like me) you don't know much about Rap 'music', here is a standard example (above) from S London. I think it's much the same the world over.

The clothes are always the same, the 'songs' always equally vacuous and tune-free, the message always aggressive, and the overall ambiance one of anti-society, and lawlessness.

Smoking Ganga is obligatory, and XL Bullies are optional. This is what certain communities listen to, imitate, and admire! When you see those masked men on their E Bikes whizzing around with earphones on; this is probably what they're listening to.

It certainly ain't Val Doonican.

  1. Vera Lynn shooting at Doris Day, so ridiiculous as to be hilarious. I had to laugh at the thought
My grandsons like Rap and all that sort of music. They put clips on their instagram now and again. Very strange music. Is it music?

    1. It seems to be a whole way of life. The sound, the dress, the lifestyle. All go together. Not my Cup of Tea.

  2. If you were to become a well-known Brighton rapper what would your pseudonym be Crozier? I'm thinking PARLEZVU47 or Beardie46FU. I am sure you would soon attract a devoted following with your aggressive lyrics - liberally sprinkled with thinly disguised vulgarities - just like all the other rappers.
P.S. I am not sure if you were born in 1947 or 1946 but I know you were 25 in 1972.

    1. I quite like PARLEZVU46, but would I really have to shout Rap 'music'? I'd prefer Piaf or Charles Trenet.

    2. Wasn't Charles Trenet an opening batsman? He played for Nottinghamshire at Trenet Bridge,

    3. I quite like his songs, but he did write 'Thank heaven for little boys'; if you get the picture!

  3. What a load of rubbish - call that music? No wonder youth of today are totally confused! I felt sorry for the dog (a Bully, I notice) having to listen to that, perhaps it will turn round and bite them, as a way of expressing an opinion!
I can remember my mother's comment when I bought my first Beatles record, " You're not playing that in here!"

    1. It really is awful, isn't it. Imagine growing-up with that as the 'music' of your era! The first record I bought was Bill Hayley's 'Rock around the Clock'; my people weren't too keen.

  4. Not a genre I enjoy but it’s probably a sign of getting old. aren’t the old always dismissive of the music of younger generations? Think the Rolling Stones, The Who etc?

    1. I think my/your music was far better than 'rap'. Rap is mindless and violent. You have to be an angry young man/woman to enjoy it.

    2. Are you saying Local Alien’s grandsons are angry young men?

    3. You'd have to ask THEM; I have no idea.

  5. So much of the pain in young men seems to be tied to fatherlessness. Seeking for identity. A soul cry. It's heartbreaking. David Wilkerson wrote a good back in the '50s regarding the gangs in New York City, The Cross and the Switchblade. Their anger translates into their music.

    1. I'm sure you're right. With no role model in the house, they rely on gangs for influence.

  6. Cro, many are backed in their recording careers by drug money, or made the money to start recording by selling drugs. Rap music is a favourite way to launder money for dealers. And they aren't all that way - try S'peach from Arrested Development or MC Solaar (French) and indeed Little Axe, The Wolf That House Built. A Tribe Called Quest also have some more consciousness lyrics.... there. Now you owe us a couple of nice recipe posts, which are my faves from you!

    1. I'll have to believe you, but all that I hear about rap is the violence, and of course the awful records.

  7. You'd have to check-in with your grandsons to find out what the best Rap music is. Do they have a favorite Rap musician?
    It can't be all bad.
Settling things with guns/weapons, as we all know, is common today. Just look at the world stage. It all trickles down.

    1. Luckily my grandsons prefer real music. However, two of them regularly go to Poland to fire AK47's on a range. Just for fun; of course!
