We build them up, then they turn against us.

Sir Lenny Henry CBE is a black British comedian; he was very popular from the late 1970's onwards, having made his first stage appearances on The Black and White Minstrel Show. He was loud, over confident, and at times very funny. Most people liked him.

Sadly he has recently become embroiled in a rather unnecessary type of racism. He thinks that all white people should pay recompense to all British and Caribbean black people, to the extent of £18 TRILLON. He claims that we are ALL responsible for slavery.

I recently saw him referred to as a 'comedian and racism advocate'; a slip of the pen that was just about right.

He has, OF COURSE, forgotten about the black Barbary Pirates who enslaved over A MILLION white English and Irish people between the late 1600's and the 1800's. But I suppose for Henry, 'White Lives probably DON'T Matter'.

I find it very sad when well known personalities unwittingly spread racism in this way. Personally I feel no responsibility whatsoever for past slavery. I abhor the idea of slavery totally, but I cannot be held responsible for black men capturing fellow black men in Africa, then selling them to white slave traders; to sell-on in the Americas. All that has nothing to do with me at all.

However, he might like to know that in the 21st Century slavery still exists. In the African and Indian continents, there are TENS of MILLIONS of slaves to this day. It might be better if Sir Lenny concentrated on that, rather than blaming me, and my fellow white Brits, for something that happened centuries ago.

Sadly, not so long ago he was a well-loved comedian; now he's seen as a racist fool.

N.B. Our current government has run up a 'Black Hole' of about £60 Billion which is causing huge economic problems for the country. How on earth Sir Lenny thinks they could suddenly find another £18 TRILLION is simply a puerile joke. Maybe he's just not good at 'sums'.

  1. For a period of about fifteen years I worked in the BVI for 3/4 months a year. I really enjoyed it and liked the people.
Never thought Lenny Henry was entertaining, I suspect he is feeling left out.

    1. A friend of mine has lived in Tortola for many years; you might know her (I can't mention her name).
Since Lenny's wife booted him out for 'Unreasonable behaviour', he has been a bit lost. Maybe this new, and rather silly, cause is making him feel big again.

  2. maybe he feels a bit embarresed by the way he used to portray black people in his stage and television shows, when he was younger ?

    1. But he was well liked. That doesn't seem to matter to him now. Strange man.

  3. All through the decades when the slave trade was happening, the white working class people of England were little more than slaves themselves. They laboured for little reward and lived in atrocious conditions - mostly to enrich the nobility and wealthy factory owners. Who is going to compensate the descendants of those "enslaved" people? We do not seek compensation - nor do we expect it. With all of this in mind, I also scorn Lenny Henry's ridiculous proposition. The fellow has got too big for his boots.

    1. And where on earth does he think the £18 TRILLION would come from?

    2. 623,115 "Black Caribbean" people live in Great Britain and there are around half a million more who are part "Black Caribbean" - so how would they be affected if Henry's ill-considered compensation plan ever happened?

  5. Whew. I'm not touching this one. Not with my country's history, and especially here in the South.

    1. We all welcome the abolition of slavery, but wanting us to pay-out £TRILLIONS is just plain stupid.

  6. Racism has not disappeared entirely. Not to say that it is right.
Today, protections of groups of people feeling singled out and discriminated against is raging at all-time highs.
Asking for trillions in a payout is stirring the pot!

    1. He is basically saying that all white people are guilty, and must PAY. Well we're not guilty, and his suggestion is a disgrace. This type of racism is appalling, especially coming from someone who said he suffered from racism as a child. He should know better.
