Our Local 8th May Fair.

The annual 8th May Fair at my nearby town is always one of the year's big do's.

There are flower and veg' plant salesmen,

Sausage and ham salesmen, wearing red Basque berets,

Laguiole knives and salad bowls salesmen,

Basket salesmen,

And, of course, bonbon salesmen for the children.

But there's always someone around to lower the tone, and this children's party frock, and clown costume, salesman did the honours. Heaven preserve us!!!

We didn't buy anything. The two things we were after were green asparagus, and red onion sets; neither were available.

    1. EVERYONE here uses shopping baskets. No-one would be seen dead with a supermarket plastic bag (thank goodness).

  6. I love these events. They are so jolly and colourful. And you don't usually have to pay a fortune to park the car in order to spend your money.
There are parking charges in every available space that you could possibly fit a car into in Derbyshire these days, even some of the roadside lay-by's have time restrictions, so that people can't use them to avoid paying in a car park.

  8. I think I'm green with envy -- in fact, I know I am -- as I sit shivering looking out at the blustering wind and yet another stormy wet weather front...

  9. I was flipping over the baskets, as I collect old and unusual baskets, and I was drooling over the ham vendor and the knives and salad bowls, wow. I wish everyone here used baskets to shop also, I hate plastic. You should see me when I shop with cloth bags in the store, most people look at me like I have three heads, and walk out of the 1960's hippy era.
I have to look for some onion sets also, reds and some whites, hard to find some things here in the prairieland purgatory.
Have a wonderful day to you and the Lady M.

    1. I think I left it too late for the reds, I've put two rows of whites in instead.

  10. I just purchased a set of reusable mesh produce bags. I think we are phasing out paper and plastic shopping bags, but no one ever talks about those plastic produce bags which are everywhere. I also use them for bulk items like beans and rice.

We've got a long way to go to eliminate plastic bags, but it will happen eventually.

Our local Farmer's Market has a tamale vendor who makes the best! If I can't find any veg I want, at least I walk away with flowers and a tamale.

  11. I could not find red onion sets this year so I planted seeds in the greenhouse but they are soooo small they look like they would take several years to mature. I love going to the farmers markets here they always have something worth taking home.
