400th Blog: Work In Progress.

Yes, this really is my 400th posting, so please allow me to indulge...

There are many different versions of the old adage '99% observation; 1% application'. But for the moment, 1% application suits me well; especially in this wretched weather.

In both of these landscapes I've spent days, if not weeks (because I know the locations so well), studying what constitutes their fascination for me. I have made no attempt at 'prettiness', 'design', or 'skill'. I have simply recorded what I think makes the two locations special.

I could now destroy them, as the jobs are done. They mean nothing to anyone but myself, they (more than likely) would never be desired as objects by anyone, and they demonstrate no real purpose.

Sometimes I wonder!..... Doubts, and more doubts.

  1. Congratulations on your 400th blog! I keep looking at your two landscapes and I'm curious to know what they really mean to you. And why so many doubts?

  2. Thank you Sue. I think all painters have doubts; unless of course they are successful financially, which is very rare.

  5. Painting #2, "Tracks in Snow" -- brings to mind the work of the Korean artist Lee Chul Soo:

  6. Hi Cro, I have not commented on the painting blogs as such, first of all 400!! crickey thats great in iteslef, now to the paintings, I have absolutely no idea about art works isn't that sad,we have some lovely painters/artists in our genes.Bobs Grandmother was fascinated by moths and butterflies and flowers and there are paintings of flowers on my sister in laws walls that people constantly tell her she has a moth problem,so I am used to the almost photo look works around us, we have a painting of Stuarts Peas in our room that she did,she had a lovely softness in her works,so therefore I feel so uneducated when I see others comments as the seem to "get your work", my fathers family are all sketchers working in charcoal and pencil,I remember all the cousins sitting around doing this, sadly I do not have any as the family broke up,we left to live in the country and never saw any of these cousins again, divorce its a buggar!back to the paintings I did find the first ones making me look and look and I have to say I like them.I am now going to sit and look at post 400 to see what I can "feel".I am wondering, if I understand the work does it just come to me or will I forever be wondering "whats it all about"I am really serious Cro,I would like to be able to appreciate all I see.I think anyone who can express themselves in any art form is very clever. 8. You have a definite style: elegant, simplistic, natural, poetic, masculine. Congrats on being a prolific blogger! Glad I'm a friend of beautiful Cro.

  9. Nice landscapes. I noticed that you are a fan of Stella Gibbons' book Cold Comfort Farm. Me too. It's a great read, very therapeutic. You also enjoy Flaubert. Do you have a favourite? I'm quite fond of Sentimental Education.

  10. Peter, welcome. I love Flaubert's Bovary, but the book I go back to, time and time again, is his 'Trois Contes'. Which I love to read in both Eng and Fr.
