Fruit Glut.

This is just a miniscule amount of the grapes we have growing against the house. Some will certainly end up as juice, but several wheelbarrows-full will be confined to the compost heap; otherwise they simply attract hornets.

Just look at our Quince. It's really LOADED this year, and I think I'll have to remove some of the fruit, otherwise by the time they triple in size, and turn yellow, I can see branches being broken all over.

The Bramley (our cooking apple) has gone completely bonkers. The branches are already touching the ground, and there are 'windfalls' everywhere. Even so, there's hardly space for more fruit on the tree.

We moan when we have late frosts in spring and all the fruit is destroyed, but what ARE we going to do with everything? I hate waste, but other than trying to give the stuff away, I see no alternative but the COMPOST HEAP.

Sad isn't it, but we can only eat and preserve so much! 2010 will go down as 'A Year of Plenty'.

  1. We have a large mango tree in our yard. Last summer, I believe it fed the entire flying foxand possum community in our suburb. There are only so many mangoes one can eat! And your daughter is a long way from home...Rockhampton!?

  2. We had to don protective clothing and get up at the crack of dawn to cut our grapes down last year as they were attracting so many hornets. Ours, too, willl sadly be destined for the compost heap before they get too ripe this year.

  3. Sad isn't it. Well fed possums and copious compost.

  4. I haven't checked on the grapes in a while, but they must still be unripe from the few I've seen in the kids' hands. I'll probably make some juice when they're ready. Many of our apples are littering the ground right now. I tried to keep up by making tons of apple pie, but when it hit 105 outside for a whole week, I just gave up and let the birds peck at 'em.

  5. Well fed possum and compost? Isn't that part of the grand plan too? Feeding the animals and the soil has to be a good thing. I don't think that's waste.

  6. Like I said earlier this week, I wish I was a neighbor of yours!

  7. 'Well fed possums?' (sounds like an intro to a Dame Edna dinner-show)

  8. Cro - those grapes are looking good. We've got the black grape 'Hamburg' on the south side of our garage. I made some 'black grape' jam with them last year for a change but sad to say it's still sitting untouched in the fridge! Those quince look good too.

  9. Black Hamburg is a delicious grape. We do have both black and white eating grapes but the ones above are really just for decoration. We did make grape jelly once, but it was so sweet it was inedible.
